XML:
Picture Research Guidelines
This project involved writing an instructional document, marking it up in XML and applying designs through an accompanying CSS file. I drew on my experience as a former photo researcher to write about sourcing image permissions and copyright for developing an e-learning course. XML is becoming increasingly important to publishing technologies and is of particular professional and personal interest to me.
The project comprised of a number of phases:
-
writing a short instructional document on
photo research
-
marking this document up in XML in an
appropriate structure
-
creating a CSS document
-
previewing the document in a web browser
and testing and tweaking the resulting design.
The XML, CSS and accompanying image files are available on Google Drive.
Note: Make sure to run the XML file using an internet browser once all files are downloaded.
Research and Writing Skills
This project was an enjoyable opportunity to explore XML mark up for instructional content. It involved creating concise and accurate instructions regarding image copyright and sourcing permissions. It also required analysing and structuring content so that the mark up would allow the text to be broken up and re-used as part of an XML content database. Ensuring that all content is structured with a logical hierarchy and tagged consistently is essential to future-proofing content. This is also reflected in my current professional interactions with Word styling and XML for epub and other dual print and electronic content.

XML, CSS and UX Skills
Applying the XML mark up and styling demonstrates a grasp of fundamental XML, HTML, CSS and UX principles. The CSS values were added as percentages rather than fixed sizes to ensure that the content would flow and re-size to suit the screen resolution, and ensure adaptability for mobile devices. It also applied wrapping to images to ensure that content layout remained stable. The XML mark up and CSS were created in Notepad++.

Summary
The final document demonstrates an ability to write, design and mark up XML content, and to create and implement an appropriate underlying structure. As XML has emerged as an increasingly important part of publishing technology during my professional career, I look forward to building on this knowledge in the near future.
